I've found a work-around for my own problem.
On Metalink, BUG 5929177 describes the same problem.
"SELECTING A SDO_GEOMETRY VIA DBLINK FAILS WITH ORA-22804".
It also explains that the problem only occurs when the table with the spatial data is first in the from clause which I confirmed with my own test data. However, as OWB is constructing the from clause for me I didn''t want to edit directly the PLSQL package. Instead, I used the Joiner Editor, removed then added the group so that it appeared as the last entry in the table, then re-ran the mapping with positive results.
